Powering Europe’s Green Energy Future: Solar Innovation, BESS Storage, BIPV & Electric Mobility
When the doors of Messe München swung open on 19 June 2024, the world’s most influential energy industry platform welcomed a record-breaking gathering of innovators, engineers, policymakers and clean technology leaders. The smarter E Europe 2024 — home to Intersolar Europe, ees Europe, Power2Drive Europe and EM-Power Europe — brought together 3,048 registered exhibitors across 206,000 square metres of exhibition space, making it Europe’s single largest convergence of renewable energy expertise.
With more than 115,000 visitors expected over the three-day event, the 2024 edition sent a clear signal: the global energy transition is not a future ambition — it is a present-day industrial revolution. From photovoltaic technology and building-integrated solar panels to battery energy storage systems and smart EV charging infrastructure, the exhibition delivered a comprehensive view of the solutions needed for a truly renewable 24/7 energy supply.
Solar Technology at the Forefront: Intersolar Europe 2024
The Global PV Boom
According to REN21’s Global Status Report 2024, photovoltaics saw 407 GW of new capacity deployed in a single year — a 34% increase over the previous year and the most significant annual addition in the technology’s history. That extraordinary momentum was on full display at Intersolar Europe 2024, the world’s leading solar industry exhibition.
Beyond raw capacity figures, the exhibition highlighted a qualitative evolution in solar technology. New markets, more intelligent applications, and entirely new business models continue to emerge. From utility-scale solar farms and floating PV plants on bodies of water to precision agrivoltaic systems that combine agriculture with renewable power generation, the scope of solar innovation on show reflected an industry that is rapidly maturing.
The Intersolar Forum and PV Manufacturing Stage hosted expert presentations and technical debates covering everything from PV production advances to new hybrid power plant models. SolarPower Europe launched its Global Market Outlook for Solar Power 2024–2028 at the parallel conference, reinforcing that the momentum behind solar is structural, not cyclical.
BIPV: Building-Integrated Photovoltaics Take Centre Stage
Among the most compelling emerging categories at Intersolar Europe 2024 was building-integrated photovoltaics (BIPV). Unlike conventional rooftop solar installations, BIPV systems embed photovoltaic materials directly into the architectural fabric of buildings — replacing conventional cladding, glass facades, roofing membranes and window elements with energy-generating alternatives. This convergence of architecture and energy production is transforming how the built environment contributes to renewable targets.
BIPV materials displayed at the exhibition ranged from solar glass facades and energy-generating roof tiles to semi-transparent solar modules for skylights and curtain wall systems. The appeal of BIPV lies in its dual function: it replaces materials that would be specified regardless of energy ambitions, while simultaneously generating clean power with no additional land footprint. For urban environments across Germany and the broader EU, where land is at a premium, BIPV represents one of the most scalable pathways to on-site renewable generation.
Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS): The Decade of Storage
ees Europe 2024: Storage at Scale
ees Europe 2024 covers over 760 dedicated exhibitors – with solutions across every segment of the energy storage ecosystem — from residential and commercial battery systems and cutting-edge electrochemistry to mobile storage applications and artificial intelligence-driven battery management platforms.
Why BESS Matters for the Region
Multiple reports have exposed a fundamental bottleneck in the energy supply chain: as solar and wind penetration increases, the mismatch between peak generation and peak demand grows. Battery energy storage systems resolve this mismatch by capturing surplus renewable generation and discharging it when demand peaks, grid conditions tighten, or prices rise. The technologies exhibited at ees Europe 2024 are foundational to enabling higher renewable penetration rates without grid instability.
Electric Mobility: Power2Drive Europe 2024
A 70% Surge in EV Exhibitors Reflects the Industry’s Momentum
The electric mobility exhibition, Power2Drive Europe 2024, was among the fastest-growing components of The smarter E Europe 2024. Exhibitor numbers grew by 70% year-on-year to reach 450 companies, while exhibition floor space expanded by approximately 80% to 26,500 square metres. The scale of this growth reflects the urgent convergence of two megatrends: the mainstream adoption of battery electric vehicles (BEVs) and the parallel need to build out the charging infrastructure that supports them.
The exhibition addressed these challenges head-on with dedicated zones for fleet charging solutions, smart integration of low-cost solar power with EV charging networks, and outdoor demonstrations of parking lot photovoltaics — illustrating how car parks and commercial rooftops can function simultaneously as renewable energy assets and EV charging hubs. Test drives offered visitors a first-hand experience of the vehicles that are reshaping personal mobility across Europe.
The EV-Solar Nexus: A Game-Changing Integration
One of the most significant themes emerging from Power2Drive Europe 2024 was the deepening integration between solar generation and EV charging. Solar-powered EV charging stations — where photovoltaic arrays directly power charge points, with battery storage smoothing supply — represent a virtuous circle: clean energy powering clean mobility, without drawing on a carbon-intensive grid. This integration is expected to become standard across commercial properties, retail parks, motorway service areas and residential developments across Germany and the wider EU.
Smart Home Energy: The Consumer Dimension
Bringing the Energy Transition into Every Home
While much of the coverage around The smarter E Europe 2024 focused on utility-scale and commercial applications, a critical consumer dimension ran through all four exhibitions: the empowerment of households as active participants in the energy system. The rise of prosumers — individuals who both consume and generate electricity — is reshaping grid dynamics and creating new commercial categories for technology providers.
Residential solar installations combined with home battery storage systems now allow homeowners to achieve significant self-sufficiency, selling surplus power back to the grid during peak generation and drawing down from their own storage during the evening or in poor weather conditions. When combined with a home EV charger, these systems create a fully integrated personal energy ecosystem: generate, store, drive and heat — all from the sun.
Smart Grids and the Power Infrastructure Revolution
EM-Power Europe 2024
The fourth exhibition within The smarter E Europe 2024 — EM-Power Europe — addressed the critical infrastructure dimension of the energy transition: the modernisation and digitalisation of power grids. As the share of renewable energy in the generation mix grows, grids must become smarter, more flexible and genuinely bidirectional — capable of accommodating decentralised generation from millions of rooftop solar installations, managing storage assets and coordinating EV charging loads in real time.
EM-Power Europe 2024 exhibited technologies that are making this smarter grid a reality: advanced metering infrastructure, virtual power plants, demand response platforms, power-to-heat integration and prosumer management systems. These are not experimental concepts — they are commercial products being deployed at scale across Germany, the Netherlands, Scandinavia and the broader EU.

Innovation, Integration and the Road to Net Zero
The smarter E Europe 2024 was not simply an exhibition — it was a statement of intent from an industry that has moved decisively from the margins to the mainstream. In three days at Messe München, 3,048 exhibitors, over 115,000 visitors and some of the world’s most influential voices in energy policy and technology converged to demonstrate that a renewable 24/7 energy future is achievable — and that the tools to build it already exist.
From the photovoltaic revolution showcased at Intersolar Europe to the battery storage momentum of ees Europe, from the electric mobility boom documented at Power2Drive Europe to the smart grid transformation central to EM-Power Europe — the exhibition offered a complete picture of an energy transition that is accelerating, not stalling.
The smarter E Europe 2024 demonstrated that the energy transition is not a single technology play or a government-mandated obligation. It is a complete civilisational upgrade — one that requires solar innovation, energy storage, electric mobility, smart grids and intelligent home systems working in concert. That convergence is exactly what eco° GLOBAL, across all its brands, is engineered to deliver.
